Our Story
gala_springsLike traditional Italian gelaterias we are family owned and handcraft our gelato from all natural ingredients.  In fact, our own gelato beginnings started with the raspberry, blueberry, and strawberry plants in our own backyard.  How, we wondered, to capture those luscious tastes beyond the first sweet, juicy bite of summer.  We spent months researching and perfecting our recipes to capture the essence of the fruit, enlisting family, friends, and neighbors to be official tasters. When we couldn’t keep up with the requests for more, we knew we’d achieved our goal -- the perfect balance of smooth, creamy texture and intense flavors, without sacrificing our commitment to natural ingredients and local farmers.gelato_market

We began by selling gelato at the Farmer’s Markets – buying fruit from local vendors at the market and returning the next week with fresh gelato and sorbetto.  People were amazed by the intensely fresh flavors and appreciated the connection to local farms.

In 2003 we opened our shop on NW 23rd Avenue in Portland, where we found customers who appreciate our premium gelato and friendly neighborhood gelateria atmosphere.  We want our gelateria to reflect the care that we have for the art and craft of making real gelato, but not take ourselves so seriously that we forget to have fun with it.

gelato_noseWe enjoy educating people about gelato and encourage customers to push the envelope of gastronomic pleasures -- appreciate the delicate taste and creamy texture of fresh made gelato (can you say “Mama Mia”!) and try one-of-a-kind Sweet Corn, Guinness Stout, and even Peanut & Jelly gelatos.    image4_gelato

We had some fun when we were challenged to make Olive Oil gelato.  We offered adventurous customers a blind taste test of the finished product.  Most responded “this tastes familiar…” and  “wow, this is good!”, but only a couple discriminating tasters actually guessed the flavor.   Try some of our traditional flavors like Hazelnut, Dark Chocolate, Mint Chocolate Chip, and luscious Coconut that we make fresh every day. Regardless of the flavor we continue to handcraft our gelato faithfully in the old-world manner using only fresh whole milk, a little cream, natural flavors, and love.

We stop in every Sunday after church Of course, food is not just about flavors and ingredients, it’s about sharing epicurean pleasures with a community of friends and family.  We invite you to visit our neighborhood gelateria and experience the Italian tradition!
